Joe Hart dismisses Bellingham-Tuchel rift as 'naughty' media framing after Norway win
England goalkeeper Joe Hart has defended both Jude Bellingham and Thomas Tuchel, arguing that a selectively framed post-match question — presenting only Tuchel's criticism of the 2-1 extra-time win over Norway — was responsible for the apparent rift between player and manager.
Joe Hart has moved to defuse the latest tension between Jude Bellingham and Thomas Tuchel, insisting the media storm that followed England’s 2-1 extra-time World Cup quarter-final win over Norway in Miami was sparked by a “naughty” question rather than any genuine falling-out between the pair.
Tuchel had said he was “not happy with the performance” of his players after they edged past Norway, comments that were put directly to an exhausted Bellingham moments after the final whistle. The Real Madrid midfielder’s response — “Yeah, well, whatever” — and his defence of his team-mates quickly dominated headlines, with Tuchel himself acknowledging the story had “blown up”.
Hart, speaking ahead of England’s semi-final against Argentina, argued the framing of the question to Bellingham was the root of the problem. “If you were to go off what was being asked to Jude Bellingham, which was a bit naughty in my opinion, because it was only the negative of what Thomas said,” Hart said. “Of course, he’s going to react like that, because he felt like he was being attacked having done something special.”
The former England goalkeeper was careful not to criticise journalists outright, but drew on his own playing experience to explain Bellingham’s reaction. “I’m not telling anyone how to do their job, and everyone’s within their right to ask the question,” Hart said. “I’m telling you as a player, if I’m emotional, I’m off the back of getting to a semi-final — which I haven’t done by the way — I would react like that.”
Hart also suggested the tension would be short-lived once Bellingham heard Tuchel’s full remarks in context. “When you go back behind the closed doors, and Jude Bellingham realises what he said on a whole, they’re having a laugh about it, I’m sure they are. Because I think Tuchel would expect him to react like that if that’s all he said.”
England now face Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup, a fixture Hart described as “seismic”, with the Bellingham-Tuchel dynamic set to remain under scrutiny as the tournament reaches its decisive stage.
