Ireland list defender Dunne as goalkeeper after Bazunu boycotts Israel Nations League clash

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has been forced to register Queens Park Rangers centre-half Jimmy Dunne as a goalkeeper for Sunday’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Israel in Hungary, after Bolton Wanderers shot-stopper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the squad in protest at the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

UEFA regulations require each Nations League squad to include three registered goalkeepers. With Caoimhin Kelleher and Max O’Leary already named as first and second choice, Dunne — who has spent his entire senior career as a defender — was listed in the third slot to satisfy the rule. He is expected to remain on the bench throughout the match.

Bazunu announced his withdrawal on Instagram, stating: “My decision is based purely upon my personal belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong.” He was careful to add: “It is important to note that my stance is not in opposition of the Israeli people or the Jewish community but against the atrocities in the region.”

The decision triggered an extended period of deliberation within the Ireland camp. Football Association of Ireland CEO David Courell revealed that the squad had already held an initial meeting in Pristina before travelling, at which the group reached a consensus to fulfil the fixtures. Bazunu’s withdrawal the following morning prompted a further four hours of discussion.

“There was a lot of positions presented and I think it’s important to say that from an association perspective and for everyone involved in those conversations, we were fully respectful of everyone’s right to their respective opinion on these topics,” Courell said.

A formal vote was ultimately held among the players. Courell confirmed: “It was a significant majority that was returned with the intention to continue.”

The episode reflects the broader tension surrounding Israel’s participation in UEFA competitions since the escalation of the conflict in Gaza, with several players across European football publicly expressing discomfort at facing Israeli opposition.
