Hurricanes lure Chiefs attack coach Roger Randle ahead of 2027 Super Rugby season

The Hurricanes have moved quickly to strengthen their coaching staff, confirming the signing of Chiefs attack coach Roger Randle ahead of the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season. Randle’s appointment fills the gap created by Jason Holland’s exit to the Blues.

The Hastings-born former winger spent eight seasons at the Chiefs, serving as attack coach under both Clayton McMillan and Jono Gibbes and playing a significant role in the franchise’s sustained success during that period. He is set to arrive at the Wellington-based club in October.

Randle, who made five appearances for the Hurricanes as a player, said the move carries personal meaning. “I’m really excited to join the Hurricanes and work alongside Clark and the coaching group. To come back home to the Hurricanes is something my whānau and I are looking forward to, and I can’t wait to get started at the club.”

Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw made clear the club had long admired what Randle helped build across the Tasman. “We’ve been an admirer of the Chiefs’ attack for a number of years. We know how hard it was to go up against them over the past few years, and he’s been a massive part of their success and their club,” Laidlaw said. “His Super Rugby experience, his coaching ability, the detail he brings, and the wide range of environments he’s coached in is going to be a real asset to us.”

Hurricanes chief executive Tony Philp described the recruitment process as thorough, adding that the 2026 Super Rugby champions have “full confidence” in Randle’s ability to represent the club.

Over the past seven seasons, he has made a significant contribution to our success and has had a positive impact on countless players, staff and fans. Roger leaves with our gratitude and best wishes, and he will always be welcomed back to Chiefs HQ and region.”
