The Hurricanes have re-signed hooker Jacob Devery on a one-year deal for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season, the club confirmed this week. The extension keeps the Hastings-born rake at Wellington for a sixth consecutive year, continuing a run of signings the Hurricanes have been pushing through ahead of next Wednesday’s Super Rugby Pacific squad announcements.

Devery, a three-cap Maori All Black, featured eight times during the Hurricanes’ title-winning campaign earlier this year, including an appearance off the bench in the final. He came through the club’s development pathway and made his debut in 2022, learning his trade alongside All Blacks hookers Dane Coles and Asafo Aumua.

“I’m grateful to re-sign with the Hurricanes for 2027,” Devery said. “I always feel very proud and privileged every time I get the opportunity to represent this club, and I can’t wait to get underway again next year.”

Head coach Clark Laidlaw highlighted Devery’s growth as both a player and a leader, pointing to his influence at provincial side Hawke’s Bay as evidence of his development beyond the Hurricanes environment.

“Jacob is an integral part of both Hawke’s Bay and the Hurricanes,” Laidlaw said. “He’s now developed into a leader in Hawke’s Bay and a strong, consistent professional who we can really rely on here at the Hurricanes. To have him with his experience as part of that front row crew, alongside Asafo and Vernon and Raymond, is a real plus for us as a club and gives us huge depth and players with different skill sets and abilities.”

Laidlaw added that having four experienced hookers in the squad for the coming season was an encouraging sign for the defending champions. Devery’s extension follows deals for playmakers Harry Godfrey and Brett Cameron, both confirmed in the past week as the Hurricanes build their roster ahead of the formal squad naming.
