Horner names Ferrari as the one team that could lure him back to F1

Christian Horner has publicly identified Ferrari as the sole team that could persuade him to return to Formula 1 in a conventional team principal role, igniting speculation at the Baku Grand Prix weekend that has placed Fred Vasseur’s position under an uncomfortable spotlight.

In an interview with The Times, the former Red Bull team principal — who says he is financially secure enough never to work again — admitted the urge to return to the paddock remains. What caught attention was the specificity of his answer: not as an investor, but as an employee, and only at Ferrari.

The timing is notable. Horner is preparing a promotional tour for his new book, Drive, and the comments arrived at a moment when his name was already circulating in connection with Maranello. Whether Ferrari has any genuine interest is another matter entirely.

Hamilton, who would face a distinctly awkward dynamic should his old adversary become his boss, was asked directly on Saturday evening in Baku whether he still believed the team was on the right path under Vasseur. His answer was brief and unequivocal: “Yes.”

It is not the first time Ferrari and Horner’s name have appeared in the same sentence. In 2010, the Scuderia reportedly explored the possibility of luring him from Milton Keynes as part of a package deal involving Adrian Newey. The carefully chosen language of his latest interview suggests the door, at least on his side, remains open.

Sky Germany pundit Timo Glock pushed back on the idea that any change would be wise. “Vasseur has brought Ferrari back to where they are now,” Glock said. “He has brought structure and order into the team. To replace him now and start the next wave of upheaval would, strategically speaking, be completely wrong from Ferrari’s point of view.”

For now, the scenario remains theoretical. But Horner’s comments have ensured that Vasseur heads into the next phase of the 2026 season with questions hanging over his tenure — questions that, fairly or not, will not disappear quickly.
