Hip injury: Cornelius out for several months and OM's squad depleted further
Canadian defender Derek Cornelius suffered a hip injury during training with the Canadian national team. Olympique de Marseille confirms a prolonged absence, with the Canadian coach mentioning "several months" out.
Derek Cornelius will be sidelined for several months after suffering a hip injury during a training session with the Canadian national team, Olympique de Marseille confirmed Friday evening. The Phocaean club did not specify the exact length of his unavailability, but Canada’s coach had already mentioned “several months” earlier in the week.
The medical staffs of both entities are in close contact. “The nature of his injury already suggests a significant period of unavailability. The club will provide further updates on his situation as soon as medical assessments allow us to clarify the details,” OM stated in its statement.
Cornelius was not a regular starter under Bruno Genesio — the Marseille coach had only fielded him from the start in Europa League since the beginning of the season. But his loss nonetheless represents another blow to an already weakened squad. The former Malmö defender represented an additional option in a back line that Genesio can scarcely afford to thin out any further.
