Kimi Antonelli’s win at the United States Grand Prix in Austin has intensified scrutiny over George Russell’s long-term future at Mercedes, with F1 TV pundit James Hinchcliffe suggesting the Briton’s camp may already be weighing options elsewhere.

Antonelli, the 18-year-old Italian who was personally recruited by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, now leads the 2026 drivers’ championship with 365 points after claiming victory at the Circuit of the Americas. Russell, who won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and the Chinese sprint race, sits second with 242 points. Antonelli narrowly missed clinching the title in Austin and has another opportunity at the Mexican Grand Prix.

Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Hinchcliffe — a former IndyCar driver — outlined why the dynamic inside the Mercedes garage could push Russell to at least consider his position. “He is a Mercedes creation. He’s a Toto creation,” Hinchcliffe said of Antonelli. “And you’ve got George, who was similar to a lesser extent, was part of the Mercedes family. They had him at Williams, obviously, being groomed to take over for Lewis. And this was kind of the year that he had to really stamp that authority.”

Hinchcliffe stopped short of predicting a departure, acknowledging that no driver draws sweeping conclusions from a single season. “You’re never going to look at one year as a driver getting beat by your team-mate and think, ‘Oh, I’m washed,’” he said. “You’re going to think, ‘He was better than me this year, but I can bounce back.’ But when you look at all the factors — how young he is, how early he did it in his career, the fact that he was Toto’s personal project — even if you’re not that guy, 1% of your brain at minimum has to at least have had that thought.”

Hinchcliffe also pointed to the timeline of Russell’s most recent contract renewal as evidence that alternative conversations have already been initiated. “George’s contract took a while to get picked up, announced, whatever, last year. Those conversations already started. I know for a fact that his management went up and down the paddock and had conversations with people. So those relationships have already been established. There’s nothing to say that those conversations can’t be struck back up pretty quickly.”

Russell remains in championship contention heading into Mexico, but with Antonelli requiring only a strong result to seal the title, the pressure on the 27-year-old to reassert himself within the team is mounting.
