Chris Hilsenbeck’s long-range penalty in the 78th minute sealed a 30-29 win for the USA over Portugal in a Nations Cup classic in Denver on Saturday. The Eagles survived a four-try haul from winger Manuel Cardoso Pinto and multiple red cards to snatch a result that mirrored a similarly tight encounter between the sides in late 2024.

Cardoso Pinto was the standout performer of the night, crossing inside two minutes after chasing a kick ahead from fly-half Manuel Vareiro. He added a second try seven minutes later in almost identical fashion, and Portugal were scoring at more than a point a minute before the USA found their footing.

Cory Daniel pulled one back for the Eagles after peeling off a scrum, but the USA were reduced to 14 men when midfielder Tavite Lopeti was yellow-carded for a high tackle. Portugal capitalised immediately, with Cardoso Pinto completing a hat-trick in the 23rd minute.

The match turned significantly when Vareiro was shown a yellow card — later upgraded to a 20-minute red — after catching USA debutant Perry Mayo with his boot while contesting a high ball. Portugal lock Martim Belo also spent ten minutes in the sin bin, and Pedro Vicente later received a red card of his own, leaving Os Lobos severely depleted at key moments.

USA inside centre Dominic Besag ran in a try in the final play of the first half to level the scores at 19-19, and Hilsenbeck’s conversion gave the Eagles their first lead of the night. A Samuel Marques penalty on the 50th minute edged Portugal back in front, before two Hilsenbeck kicks put the USA five points clear with 20 minutes remaining.

Cardoso Pinto levelled again after latching onto a long cut-out pass from winger Raffaele Storti, and the conversion put Portugal ahead by one. With the clock winding down, Hilsenbeck stepped up from long range to slot the decisive penalty and deny Portugal the victory they had been threatening throughout.

The result keeps the USA’s Nations Cup campaign on track, while Portugal will reflect on a performance that had the quality to win but was ultimately undermined by their disciplinary record.
