Highlanders add Jimmy Maher as assistant coach ahead of 2027 Super Rugby season
The Highlanders have signed North Harbour NPC head coach Jimmy Maher on a one-year deal, bringing in the man who guided Harbour from last place in 2025 to a quarter-final finish in 2026.
The Highlanders have bolstered their coaching staff for 2027 by signing North Harbour Hilux NPC head coach Jimmy Maher on a one-year deal, joining a group that already includes head coach Jamie Joseph and former All Black Ben Smith.
Maher’s credentials are built on a rapid turnaround at North Harbour. In 2025, the province finished bottom of the NPC standings; under his guidance in 2026, they climbed to fourth in the regular season and reached the quarter-finals. Several club rugby players also earned Super Rugby Pacific contracts during his tenure, underlining his reputation for player development.
Joseph cited that developmental focus as central to the appointment. “Jimmy’s coaching expertise, leadership qualities, and a genuine passion for player development were key skills we were looking for,” he said. “It’s a role that will help drive an enhanced development mentality within the team with the goal of continual player improvement throughout the season. He has demonstrated the ability to connect with players, challenge them to improve, and help create environments where individuals and teams can thrive.”
Maher said he was drawn by the franchise’s history and its culture of producing quality players. “The Highlanders have a proud history, a passionate supporter base, and a reputation for developing quality players and people,” he said. “I am looking forward to working alongside the coaching group, staff, and players to build towards the future and continue to strive for success.”
The announcement follows the Dunedin-based franchise’s confirmation three weeks ago of Boris Stankovich as their new forwards and scrum coach. Stankovich, a former Coventry player and coach, brings international experience from stints at Leicester Tigers and as scrum coach for Canada and Russia.
“He has a reputation for delivering clarity, technical detail, and a calm authority to the set piece,” Joseph said of Stankovich. “He understands how to build a pack that works for each other, and he’s passionate about developing players.”
The two appointments help fill gaps left by the recent departures of National Pathways head coach Kane Jury and former interim Highlanders coach Clarke Dermody. The Highlanders’ full 2027 coaching staff now includes Joseph, Smith, Maher, Stankovich, attack coach Ryan Bambry, and former Kiwis Rugby League head coach David Kidwell.
