Eddie Sigauke is set to make his Harlequins first-team debut after Christmas, according to head coach Jason Gilmore, after the 22-year-old Zimbabwe winger went viral this week with a stunning 90-metre try against Leicester Tigers under-23s at the Stoop.

Sigauke arrived in London from South Africa over the summer and wasted no time announcing himself to Quins supporters, scoring with his first two touches in a pre-season friendly against Edinburgh — including a second try in which he beat three defenders in open space and covered 40 metres.

“Eddie’s lightning quick,” Gilmore said. “He’s just got absolute jets, and we’re really lucky to have Eddie at the club. He’s got a few things that he needs to work on defensively, with the high ball and his aerial game, which he’s working really hard on at the moment. But I’d like to think that Eddie will be featuring in the senior team, probably post-Christmas.”

The Zimbabwe international has earned 12 caps for his country, scoring eight tries, and played a significant role in helping Zimbabwe qualify for next year’s Rugby World Cup in Australia — their first appearance at the tournament since 1991.

Gilmore acknowledged that Sigauke still has areas to develop but was unambiguous about the upside his raw pace brings to the squad. “You can’t coach speed, and he’s got a ton of it,” the Harlequins boss said. “Once he works out how to use his speed on both sides of the ball, he’s going to be a real threat for us.”

In the meantime, Sigauke’s presence is already having an effect on the wider group, with Gilmore noting that the youngster is keeping established wide men — including Caden Murley — sharp in training. “He’s been a bit of a project for us, and he’s keeping Caden Murley and our quick boys on their toes in training. That’s for sure.”

Gilmore also highlighted Sigauke’s background away from the pitch, describing him as “a highly intelligent young man who is really driven” after completing university studies in South Africa. With Zimbabwe’s World Cup campaign on the horizon and a Harlequins first-team slot within reach, the winger appears to have arrived at the right club at the right time.
