Finn Prass capped a breakout season in style on Saturday, winning the Tony Shaw Medal as Queensland Premier Rugby’s Player of the Grand Final as Brothers crushed Wests Bulldogs 51-14 in the Hospital Cup decider — the third-largest winning margin in the competition’s history. The 21-year-old fly-half then confirmed he is heading to Japan on a two-year professional deal with Rugby League One club the Urayasu D-Rocks.

Prass was the architect of the victory, racing away for a long-range try just before half-time and landing a monstrous 50/22 among a string of influential moments. Brothers’ 37-point margin is the biggest in a Hospital Cup Grand Final in almost two decades, bettered only by Sunnybank’s 66-point win over Gold Coast in 2007 and Canberra’s 42-point triumph over Easts in 2002.

Wallabies squad member Harry McLaughlin-Phillips started at fly-half for Wests and made an impact despite the scoreline, but could not stem a Brothers side that Prass described as a privilege to play in.

“It’s a pretty big thrill,” Prass told RugbyPass. “It was an incredible feeling, it was awesome. I’m spoiled for choice. It’s so easy to play with that group — we’ve got an unbelievable forward pack and some really exciting, talented backs. It makes my job super easy.”

The Sunshine Coast Grammar School product visited Japan for the first time on holiday last year and wasted little time in pursuing a professional opportunity there. His move to the D-Rocks — who finished 5-13 last season — brings him into a squad that has included Springboks backrower Jasper Wiese, former Maori All Blacks first five-eighth Otere Black, and experienced Wallabies centre Samu Kerevi.

New signings joining Prass at Urayasu for the 2026-27 season include Hurricanes loose forward Devan Flanders, former Canes and Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights centre Vince Aso, and current Wallabies squad member Jordan Petaia.

“I was really interested in the opportunity given some of the boys they’ve got in that squad,” Prass said. “Samu Kerevi is world-class, and Otere Black as well — some great people in that group. Being young, there’s not as much holding me back. Just the opportunity to go over there, experience a new culture, a new country, a new language, and then on top of that with footy — I couldn’t turn it down.”
