Gloucester sign Coventry prop Oliver Salt as Championship pipeline delivers again
Gloucester have recruited Coventry tight-head Oliver Salt after 69 appearances in the Championship, making him the third player from the club alone to earn a Premiership move this season.
Gloucester have signed Coventry tight-head Oliver Salt ahead of next season, with the 26-year-old becoming the latest player to earn a Premiership call-up after establishing himself in the Championship.
Salt made 69 appearances across three seasons at Coventry and joins winger David Opoku, who moved to Sale Sharks, and back-rower Allan Ferrie, who signed for Newcastle, in making the step up from the same club. The trio’s departures underline the Championship’s growing reputation as a genuine proving ground for players with top-flight ambitions.
“Eliot is a player who has earned a really strong reputation in the Champ and has been very consistent over a number of seasons,” said Gloucester head coach George Skivington. “He’s at a good age for a prop and has plenty of experience already, but we also believe there’s more to come from him. We’re looking forward to bringing him into the group and seeing him develop further in our environment.”
Salt, who has already linked up with the Gloucester squad, expressed his gratitude to Coventry upon his departure. “I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to make the step up to the Prem,” he said. “Obviously none of this would’ve been possible without the support of the club and the environment I’ve been in for the last three years, so I want to say a huge thank you to the coaches and my teammates.”
The prop also paid tribute to Coventry’s supporters. “I want to say a big thank you to the fans as well — they’ve got us over the line a few times in tight games and I’ll miss their unwavering support.”
Coventry have already identified a successor for Salt and are expected to confirm the signing once an international visa has been granted.
