Fiorentina and Napoli failed to find a winner on Sunday in Florence, sharing the spoils 1-1 in Matchday 5 of Serie A.

Without several key players — McTominay, Meret, Spinazzola and Alisson on the Napoli side — the visitors nonetheless took the lead through Billy Gilmour, who found the net in the 23rd minute. Fiorentina responded in the second half: Alex Jimenez equalized in the 53rd with a deflected shot that beat Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. David de Gea, in the Fiorentina goal, then held firm to preserve the draw.

For the Viola, this result brings their tally to four points from two matches under Paolo Vanoli, appointed to replace Fabio Grosso, who was sacked after a disastrous start to the season — three defeats in three games. The record remains modest, but the shift in momentum is real.

Naples, meanwhile, now have seven points and trail the leading teams — Inter, Roma and Lazio — by six points. A worrying gap for a club that aimed for a return to the top after the 2023 title, especially as absences have mounted early in the season.
