George Russell reveals nerves and ring design behind Dutch GP engagement announcement
Mercedes driver George Russell has opened up about his proposal to long-term partner Carmen Montero Mundt, revealing he lost his words when down on one knee at a candlelit beachfront dinner during the F1 summer break.
George Russell admitted he was overcome with nerves when he proposed to long-term partner Carmen Montero Mundt during the Formula 1 summer break, sharing details of the moment at the Dutch Grand Prix press conference on Thursday.
The Mercedes driver, who announced the engagement on social media alongside photos of a candlelit beachfront dinner, said considerable thought went into both the setting and the ring itself. “It was very special, and it was a really, really nice time to do it. A lot of thought went into it, and it was a really interesting process, designing the ring and doing all of that,” Russell said.
Despite the careful preparation, the 28-year-old confessed the actual moment caught him off guard emotionally. “When I came to the moment, I couldn’t actually get my words out. It was like suddenly I got really nervous when I was on one knee, but that was great, so thank you.”
Russell also confirmed the break allowed him to fully disconnect from racing ahead of what promises to be a demanding second half of the season. He currently sits third in the drivers’ championship, 59 points behind Mercedes team-mate and leader Kimi Antonelli and nine points adrift of second-placed Lewis Hamilton.
“Especially coming into the second half of the season now, it’s going to be very intense for us all, so just really making the most of those two weeks — and obviously I had that on my mind for the first 10 days of the break, so that was great,” he said.
In typically dry fashion, Russell joked that the engagement might translate into lap-time gains. “I hope it brings a couple of tenths. Even Lando [Norris] will be getting engaged if it brings a couple of tenths,” he laughed.
On a more serious note, Russell reflected on the role Montero Mundt has played throughout his career. “Personal life is so important. I think for all of us, we live such a hectic life. The people we live it with are such a key part of that, and riding those emotions with you. I don’t think it changes a huge amount because she’s been such an important person in my life for so long — it was just more about making that next step that we needed to do.”
