Gary Neville hosts Greater Manchester small businesses event at Salford City
Gary Neville welcomed independent business owners, sole traders and accountants to Salford City FC for an event celebrating the role of small businesses in Greater Manchester's football communities ahead of the festive period.
Gary Neville brought together small business owners from across Greater Manchester at Salford City FC for an event recognising the contribution of independent traders to local football communities during the festive season.
Neville, a co-owner of Salford City, hosted the gathering in his capacity as ambassador for Sage, the EFL’s official accounting software partner. Among those celebrated were bakeries, barbers, home fragrance makers and a range of other independent businesses, with the event shining a light on the role such traders play in supporting customers and communities — particularly during the busy Christmas period when orders rise and deadlines tighten.
“Football clubs sit at the heart of their communities, but it’s the local businesses around them that help bring those communities to life every day,” Neville said. “From the café supporters visit before a match to the suppliers, retailers and accountants helping businesses grow, they’re all part of what makes a football community thrive. It was great to recognise what these businesses contribute to Greater Manchester, both on matchdays and throughout the year.”
Simon Peers, owner of Phoenix Flooring in Salford, was among those in attendance. “Christmas is one of those moments when deadlines really matter to our customers,” he said. “A huge amount of care goes into making sure projects are finished in time for families to decorate their homes and enjoy them over the festive period. It was great to have that work recognised and to meet other Greater Manchester businesses putting the same care into making Christmas special for their customers.”
Business owners also took part in a behind-the-scenes stadium tour, a festive meal, and a panel discussion exploring the relationship between football, business and community. The conversation included contributions from Neville, Sage Senior Director of Global Sponsorship Sally Moore, and Salford City players Joe Powell and Paolo Mariani.
Moore said the event was designed to acknowledge small businesses before the festive rush. “Christmas doesn’t just happen,” she said. “Behind the matchdays, celebrations and traditions people enjoy are small businesses bringing skill, care and attention to every detail.”
