France name 33 protected players under new nine-Test cap ahead of 2027 World Cup

France’s rugby authorities have named 33 elite internationals who will benefit from a new workload-management programme that caps each player at nine Test matches per season, as the Fédération Française de Rugby and the Ligue Nationale de Rugby align on a joint strategy ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup on home soil.

French outlet Midi Olympique revealed the full list on Sunday, though the players and their clubs had already been briefed by the FFR and LNR before publication. The programme requires each player to rest one weekend in every four-weekend block — or two weekends across an eight-weekend block — to prevent fatigue during the club season.

With Les Bleus currently scheduled to play 11 matches across the Nations Championship and the Six Nations, the nine-Test ceiling means players such as fly-half Matthieu Jalibert and lock Emmanuel Meafou will be stood down for at least two internationals per season. France’s coaching staff and clubs retain the flexibility to adjust individual rest and competition schedules by mutual agreement.

Stade Toulousain dominate the list with 13 representatives, including Antoine Dupont, Romain Ntamack, Julien Marchand and Thibaud Flament. Union Bordeaux-Bègles contribute six players, while Stade Rochelais, Section Paloise and RC Toulon each provide three. Racing 92 have two players on the list, with ASM Clermont, LOU and Montpellier each contributing one.

Notable absentees include UBB scrum-half Maxime Lucu, La Rochelle No. 8 Grégory Alldritt and Section Paloise lock Hugo Auradou. The list was compiled in the weeks before the Six Nations, which may explain Lucu’s omission — he missed the tournament through injury and could yet be added to the programme. Auradou’s situation is similar, while Alldritt’s absence appears to reflect head coach Fabien Galthié’s selection policy rather than any fitness concern.

The presence of Gaël Fickou and Romain Taofifenua, both of whom last represented France in November 2025, signals that the list is not fixed and will evolve over the coming months.

LNR president Yann Roubert was careful to stress that inclusion on the 33-man list does not constitute a guarantee of selection for the 2027 World Cup. What it does confirm, he said, is that the FFR and LNR are committed to giving Les Bleus the best possible platform to deliver a historic result on French soil.
