France appeal to FIFA to clear Olise before World Cup quarter-final against Morocco
The French Football Federation has formally asked FIFA to rescind Michael Olise's yellow card ahead of Thursday's quarter-final against Morocco in Foxborough. The Bayern Munich winger, who leads the tournament with five assists, picked up the booking during France's last-16 win over Paraguay.
The French Football Federation (FFF) has lodged a formal appeal with FIFA to have Michael Olise’s yellow card overturned before France face Morocco in the World Cup quarter-finals on Thursday in Foxborough. The Bayern Munich winger was booked during Saturday’s last-16 victory over Paraguay after an altercation with Matias Galarza, who went to ground claiming facial contact — though television replays suggested Olise’s involvement was limited to a shirt tug.
The caution leaves Olise one booking away from a mandatory one-match suspension. A second yellow card against Morocco would rule him out of a potential semi-final against either Spain or Portugal, a prospect the FFF is clearly determined to avoid.
French officials have described the original booking as a clear officiating error and insist their appeal rests entirely on the merits of Olise’s case. The FFF has been careful to distance the request from the recent controversy surrounding USMNT striker Folarin Balogun, whose one-match ban was suspended by FIFA under Article 27 of its disciplinary code following interventions from U.S. Soccer and U.S. President Donald Trump. That decision, which allowed Balogun to play against Belgium in the last 16 after an initial red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina, was described by FIFA as unprecedented. The timing of France’s appeal, however, suggests that member associations are increasingly willing to challenge on-field decisions in the wake of that ruling.
The stakes are considerable given Olise’s form throughout the tournament. The 23-year-old currently leads the World Cup assist charts with five — the most by any player in a single tournament since 1994 and one short of the all-time record of six set by Pelé in 1970. He has been named Man of the Match twice: first in France’s opening 3-1 win over Senegal, where he set up Kylian Mbappé’s goal, and again in the 3-0 round-of-32 victory over Sweden, where he contributed two assists.
FIFA has yet to announce a decision on the FFF’s appeal. Should it be rejected, Olise will need to avoid any further disciplinary action against Morocco to remain available for the latter stages of the competition.
