Former England youth international James Walker dies at 38, six years after cardiac arrest
James Walker, a former England under-17 international who came through Charlton Athletic's academy, has died at the age of 38. His former club Southend United confirmed the news and will hold a minute's applause in his honour.
James Walker, a former England under-17 international who made 54 appearances for Southend United, died on 19 September at the age of 38. The ex-Charlton Athletic academy product had been living in a 24-hour care home in Southend since suffering a cardiac arrest in 2019. His funeral is scheduled for 28 October in Southend.
Walker’s life changed irrevocably in 2019 when he suffered a cardiac arrest while demonstrating a somersault to a PE class, an event that stopped blood flow to his brain and left him in a coma for 15 days. He survived but was left with significant physical and mental impairments, requiring round-the-clock care. In November of last year he suffered a second cardiac arrest that severely affected his mobility, though he subsequently regained some consciousness and hearing.
Despite the setbacks, Walker received considerable support from the football community during his rehabilitation. In May 2023, the Southend United Ex-Player Association organised a benefit match to raise funds for his recovery, with former Shrimpers manager Steve Tilson and coach Paul Brush leading a legends side packed with club heroes.
Southend United released an official statement paying tribute to their former player. “James made 54 appearances between 2008 and 2010 for the Shrimpers, scoring eight goals,” the club said. “A product of Charlton Athletic’s academy, James also represented the likes of Hartlepool United, Bristol Rovers, Leyton Orient, Notts County, Yeovil Town and Gillingham, before suffering a massive cardiac arrest in 2019 which resulted in significant physical and mental impairments. On Saturday we will be conducting a minute’s applause in his honour ahead of kick-off. Rest in peace, James.”
Walker’s passing was also confirmed by the Southend United Ex-Player Association, which announced on social media that he “passed away peacefully in his sleep” on 19 September.
