Jules Koundé no longer has a guaranteed place in FC Barcelona’s starting lineup. At a press conference on Saturday, manager Hansi Flick explicitly warned the French defender that he must now fight for his place.

“He is not an undisputed starter this season, but it is a challenge for him,” said the German coach, while praising the former Sevilla player’s qualities: “He is an exceptional professional. He can be a fantastic option at any position. You have to choose the right moment and the right position depending on the situation.”

Since arriving in Catalonia in the summer of 2022, Koundé had established himself as a cornerstone of Barcelona’s defence, reaching according to Flick “his best level” at right-back during the 2024-2025 season. But the context has changed: the emergence of Xavi Espart, the return of Joao Cancelo and the versatility of Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin have significantly increased competition in that area.

A move to centre-back is also being discussed internally, a position that Koundé particularly enjoys. Flick did not rule out this option: “I know he can play centre-back.” The coach nevertheless stressed the collective priority: “We always think about what is best for the team.”

For the former Bordeaux player, the message is unambiguous. After several seasons establishing himself as a key player at Barcelona, Koundé is entering this campaign with a diminished status. Flick nevertheless emphasized his player’s commitment: “He is working incredibly hard to get back to his best form.”
