Fijian Drua sign Taranaki loose-forward Namosimalua for 2027 Super Rugby season
The Fijian Drua have secured 23-year-old Taranaki loose-forward Josefa Namosimalua on a full contract for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season, with head coach Brad Mooar praising his standout NPC form and averaging more than 18 tackles per game.
The Fijian Drua have signed Taranaki loose-forward Josefa Namosimalua on a full contract for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season, the club confirmed, with the 23-year-old set to return to Fiji after impressing in New Zealand’s domestic competition.
Namosimalua has been one of the more eye-catching performers in the 2026 Hilux NPC season, combining a powerful ball-carrying game with a relentless defensive work rate. New Drua head coach Brad Mooar, who departed the Crusaders after the 2026 season, cited those numbers as a key factor in the recruitment.
“He has been a standout performer for Taranaki in the NPC, with a massive work rate, getting through more than 18 tackles a game,” Mooar said. “He loves the physical side of the game, enjoys the cleanout work and is also a very skilful and athletic player with ball in hand.”
Mooar traced Namosimalua’s journey from his roots in Lau through Suva Grammar School and on to Whanganui, where he developed his game before breaking into the NPC. “He has worked incredibly hard and made the most of every opportunity that has come his way,” the coach added. “This is a really special moment for Josefa, his family and for us as a club.”
Namosimalua, who has also been named in the Flying Fijians’ extended squad for their three Nations Championship Tests in November, expressed his gratitude at the chance to represent the Drua on home soil.
“I’m beyond grateful and truly honoured to be part of the Drua vuvale,” he said. “A big vinaka vakalevu to the Drua for giving me this opportunity to come home and represent my people. I’m excited to be back in the homeland, to play alongside some big names and talented players, and most of all, I’m excited to put on that blue jersey.”
