Fernandes returns to full training with Portugal ahead of Denmark clash, easing Man Utd fears
Bruno Fernandes, who missed Portugal's win over Norway with a persistent injury, has rejoined full training and is available for their clash with Denmark in Copenhagen, allaying Manchester United's concerns over their captain.
Bruno Fernandes has returned to full training with Portugal and is available for their Nations League fixture against Denmark in Copenhagen, easing fears at Manchester United over the fitness of their captain.
The 32-year-old missed Portugal’s clash with Norway last week after sitting out with a persistent problem, completing only an individual training programme while remaining with the squad. Reports from Portugal indicate that Fernandes travelled to Malmö with the rest of his teammates and trained normally, with no lasting effects detected.
Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus had been cautious about the midfielder’s condition after he was withdrawn during the earlier game against Wales. “Bruno Fernandes came off with a complicated problem,” Jesus said. “He’s coming off an injury at United, and he told me he’s been playing with that pain for the last three games, which is hindering him. It was one of the factors that prevented Bruno from playing at his best against Wales. I prefer not to risk it in this game so he’s fully fit for the Denmark match.”
Jesus also noted that Nuno Mendes was among the players being monitored during the break, though the left-back was considered likely to be available for the Norway fixture.
While United will be relieved that Fernandes has avoided a long-term setback, the club may have preferred their captain to use the international window for additional rest. Instead, he is now expected to feature in Portugal’s starting XI against Denmark, with a further game against Norway to follow before he returns to club duties.
Fernandes has been one of United’s standout performers this season under Michael Carrick, contributing four goals and one assist in seven appearances. The Red Devils face Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in their next Premier League fixture, followed by a Champions League tie against Atlético Madrid.
