The Football Association has warned it will “take action where appropriate” after an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of almost all of the Premier League’s financial charges against them, covering a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018.

The commission concluded that City created “sham” commercial contracts as part of schemes to inflate revenue and conceal costs by more than £900m. In a statement, the FA said the verdict carried “significant implications for the integrity of the game” and that it was “carefully considering the decision and its implications.”

“As proceedings between the Premier League and Manchester City Football Club remain ongoing, we do not intend to comment further at this stage,” the FA added. “We will, however, continue to monitor developments closely.”

City have strongly rejected the findings. Chief executive Ferran Soriano described the outcome as a “Premier League conspiracy” in a video message to club staff, and the club reiterated its innocence in public statements following the verdict.

City have until Friday 2 October to formally submit their appeal, and the club could pursue the case through the High Court if the commission’s verdict is upheld at that stage. The FA’s statement signals that further regulatory consequences may follow depending on how those proceedings develop.
