Eriksen parts ways with Wolfsburg three months after collapsing on pitch for Denmark

Christian Eriksen has left Wolfsburg after the German club agreed to cancel his contract at the midfielder’s own request, three months after he collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s international against Ukraine.

Eriksen fell to the ground midway through the second half of the June fixture, and was taken to hospital as the match was abandoned. The incident drew immediate comparisons to his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, which had required him to be fitted with an implantable defibrillator and temporarily ended his career at Inter Milan due to Serie A regulations.

Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hecking confirmed the departure, saying the club had always intended to leave the decision in Eriksen’s hands. “For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract,” Hecking said.

“Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans. We would like to thank Christian and wish him and his family all the very best.”

Eriksen, who joined Wolfsburg last summer after leaving Manchester United, made 34 appearances across all competitions during his single season at the club, scoring three times and contributing ten assists. That output was not enough to prevent Wolfsburg from being relegated to the second tier of German football.

In a statement, Eriksen said proximity to his family was now his priority. “At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together,” he said. “My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me during my time at VfL and in Wolfsburg.”

Eriksen had previously rebuilt his career with Brentford after his Euro 2020 scare before joining Manchester United, where he spent two seasons. No announcement has been made regarding his next steps or whether he intends to continue playing.
