Endrick rejects Liverpool move to fight for Real Madrid place under Mourinho
Real Madrid forward Endrick has turned down reported interest from Liverpool, choosing to battle for a starting spot at the Bernabeu under José Mourinho despite fierce competition from Vinicius Junior, Mbappé and £100m signing Yan Diomande.
Real Madrid forward Endrick has rejected a move to Liverpool, opting instead to compete for his place at the Bernabeu under José Mourinho, according to a report from ESPN. The decision leaves new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola short of attacking cover as the club prepare for their Premier League opener at Newcastle on Sunday.
Endrick, 20, returns to Madrid in strong form after a productive loan spell at Lyon, where he contributed eight goals and eight assists in 21 appearances last season. He had hoped that form would earn him a genuine shot at regular minutes for Real, but the arrival of £100m signing Yan Diomande has complicated his path into the starting XI.
Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappé are considered automatic starters in Mourinho’s attack, occupying two of the three main forward positions. Diomande is widely expected to fill the third, while winger Rodrygo — currently recovering from injury — is also reportedly part of Mourinho’s plans. Despite that gauntlet of competition, Endrick has reportedly decided to stay and fight rather than seek a move.
The Brazilian’s decision is a blow for Liverpool, who are without a natural wide forward following Mohamed Salah’s departure this summer. Endrick had been identified as a player who could cover both the right flank and the central striking role currently occupied by Alexander Isak.
Liverpool’s search for reinforcements has also hit a separate obstacle this week, with a £50m bid for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh rejected. The club are expected to return with an improved offer before the transfer window closes.
Iraola, who takes charge of his first competitive game at St James’ Park on Sunday, has publicly promised further signings in the final week of the window. The Spaniard replaced Arne Slot at Anfield this summer and has been tasked with returning Liverpool to title contention after a campaign that, despite a Champions League qualification, fell short of expectations.
