Declan Rice limps off at Villa Park to hand Arsenal a fresh injury scare

Declan Rice limped off in the closing stages of Arsenal’s 1-0 Premier League victory at Villa Park on Monday, handing manager Mikel Arteta an anxious wait over the England midfielder’s fitness.

Bukayo Saka’s 59th-minute strike proved the difference on the night, but the win was overshadowed by two injury concerns in quick succession. In the 81st minute, centre-back Cristhian Mosquera went down clutching his thigh and was replaced by Ezri Konsa. Four minutes later, Rice was withdrawn while visibly limping, with Martin Zubimendi coming on to see out the final moments.

Arsenal have yet to confirm whether Rice’s substitution was precautionary or the result of a muscle strain. The uncertainty is heightened by the midfielder’s difficult summer, during which he reportedly suffered from neural pain affecting his lower back and hamstrings while representing England at the 2026 World Cup.

Those issues are widely attributed to the physical toll of a gruelling 2025/26 club season, in which Rice made 55 appearances for Arsenal — 49 of them starts. His recovery window before returning to action was also notably short: England’s final World Cup match was played on July 18, and Rice had fewer than four weeks of rest before joining Arsenal’s pre-season and featuring in the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 16.

The timing compounds an already difficult situation at the back for Arteta. William Saliba has already been ruled out for the foreseeable future after sustaining a back injury during the World Cup, meaning the loss of Rice — the engine of Arsenal’s midfield — would represent a significant blow to the club’s early-season ambitions.

Arteta will be hoping the issue proves minor as Arsenal assess Rice’s condition ahead of their upcoming fixtures.
