De la Fuente signs record six-year Spain extension after back-to-back major titles

Luis de la Fuente has signed a six-year contract extension with Spain, keeping him in charge of La Roja until the end of Euro 2032 — the longest tenure ever agreed for a Spain head coach.

The Spanish FA (RFEF) ratified the deal at an Executive Committee meeting in Madrid on Monday, formally approving an agreement that had been reached during the World Cup, which Spain won by beating Argentina in the final in July. The extension takes De la Fuente through three more major tournaments, including a home World Cup in 2030.

“During Euro 2024, we began to emphasise a word that gave us a great deal of security, confidence and strength — family,” De la Fuente said at a press conference on Monday. “We want the Spanish national team to be a family and that is honestly how we feel. We are not content with what we have achieved so far. The best is yet to come.”

The deal includes a considerable pay rise, reflecting De la Fuente’s extraordinary record since taking charge. He has delivered back-to-back major titles — Euro 2024, where Spain defeated England in the final, followed by the World Cup triumph this summer — and has overseen Spain’s longest unbeaten run in their international history, stretching to 38 matches without defeat.

Across 50 matches in charge, De la Fuente’s record stands at 38 wins, 10 draws and just two defeats. Both losses came outside competitive football: a friendly against Colombia in London and a Nations League defeat to Scotland, which remains his only competitive setback.
