Croatia's win over Ghana ends Scotland's World Cup hopes at the group stage
Scotland have been eliminated from the World Cup after Croatia beat Ghana 2-1, confirming the Scots cannot finish among the top eight third-placed teams. Steve Clarke's side exit with three points from Group C, their wait for a first knockout-round appearance continuing.
Scotland’s World Cup is over after Croatia’s 2-1 victory over Ghana on Thursday confirmed that Steve Clarke’s side cannot advance as one of the eight qualifying third-placed teams, ending their tournament at the group stage.
The Scots had already been locked into third place in Group C following a 3-0 defeat to Brazil on Wednesday, a result that left them dependent on results elsewhere. Heading into the final round of group fixtures they sat tenth in the third-place standings, needing a combination of results to climb into the top eight — a margin that proved too great to bridge.
Croatia’s win was the decisive blow. Petar Sucic opened the scoring with a fierce long-range strike inside 30 minutes, and although Derrick Luckassen equalised for Ghana, Nikola Vlasic sealed the points for the Croatians. The result meant Ghana could not overhaul Scotland’s goal difference, extinguishing the last flicker of hope for the Tartan Army.
Scotland’s fate had been complicated further by earlier results on the final matchday. South Africa’s 1-0 upset win over South Korea pushed the Bafana Bafana into second place in their group, dropping South Korea — who held a superior goal difference to Scotland — into third. That result sent Scotland plummeting to seventh in the third-place table, leaving them clinging to the final qualification spot before Croatia’s game with Ghana removed even that lifeline.
The damage to Scotland’s goal difference had been inflicted by Brazil in Sao Paulo. Vinicius Junior scored twice in the first half, and Matheus Cunha added a third after the interval as the Selecao ran out comfortable winners. Clarke conceded after that game that the writing was on the wall. “Yeah for me, I think for sure we’re going home,” the Scotland manager told reporters, despite a statistical model giving his side a 24.9% chance of progressing at the time.
Scotland finish the tournament with three points from Group C, their sole victory a 1-0 win over Haiti in the opening game — a result that also eliminated Haiti on head-to-head record. The nation’s wait for a first-ever appearance in a World Cup knockout round therefore continues, a milestone that has eluded them across every tournament appearance in their history.
