Coventry end 25-year wait for home Premier League win with emphatic 4-1 rout of Newcastle
Coventry City claimed their first home Premier League victory since 1999, thrashing Newcastle 4-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Goals from Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni lifted Frank Lampard's side out of the relegation zone.
Coventry City ended a 25-year wait for a home Premier League victory on Monday night, dismantling Newcastle 4-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena to climb out of the relegation zone and draw level on points with Manchester United.
Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek spilled Brandon Thomas-Asante’s ball and then brought down Sidiki Cherif. It was Coventry’s first Premier League goal in front of their own supporters since John Hartson scored in a 1-0 win over Sunderland in April 2001 — and notably the first top-flight goal ever scored at the Coventry Building Society Arena, with that Hartson effort having come at the old Highfield Road.
Newcastle steadied themselves before the break and came close to levelling when Matias Fernandez-Pardo rounded goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, only for Bobby Thomas to produce a crucial last-man clearance on the line. It proved a pivotal moment. Three minutes into the second half, Coventry doubled their advantage as Cherif collected a headed clearance from Malick Thiaw and drove a low, hard finish through a crowd of bodies and into the bottom right corner.
Sven Botman gave Newcastle hope with a fine strike on 70 minutes to make it 2-1, but Coventry refused to buckle. Ellis Simms and substitute Stephen Mfuni added further goals to seal a comprehensive victory and send the Coventry Building Society Arena into celebration.
It was the second time in less than a month that Newcastle had conceded four goals on a Monday night, having suffered the same 4-1 scoreline against Leeds in their previous such fixture. Frank Lampard’s side, buoyed by back-to-back wins, will take significant confidence from a performance that raised serious questions about Newcastle’s defensive organisation and consistency.
