CAS denies ruling in Senegal-Morocco Africa Cup of Nations 2025 dispute
A fake document circulating on social media claims to be a CAS arbitral award stating that Senegal has recovered its Africa Cup of Nations title. The Lausanne court has formally denied this, clarifying that proceedings are still ongoing.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has denied rendering any decision in the dispute between the Senegalese Football Federation, the CAF, and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.
For several days, a document presented as a “CAS arbitral award” has been circulating widely on social media. This text claims that the Lausanne court annulled the CAF’s decision and restored Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations title. The information is false: the CAS clarified that proceedings were still ongoing and no verdict had yet been issued.
As a reminder, Senegal won the final on the pitch on January 18 against Morocco, the host nation. On March 17, 2026, the CAF decided to strip the Lions of Teranga of the title and award it to the Lions of the Atlas, due to the numerous controversies surrounding the match. The Senegalese Federation immediately appealed to the CAS to obtain the annulment of this decision.
The arbitral proceedings therefore remain open, with no guaranteed outcome for either party. Senegal is also going through a period of sporting transition: coach Pape Thiaw was removed after the national team’s elimination against Belgium in the Round of 16 of the World Cup (2-3 after extra time).
