Carrick demands mental reset as winless Manchester United host Bournemouth with nine absentees
Michael Carrick has called for improved mental preparation from his Manchester United players ahead of Sunday's home fixture against Bournemouth, with the club winless in seven games and carrying a lengthy injury list following Wednesday's 4-1 loss at Como.
Michael Carrick has urged his Manchester United squad to prioritise mental readiness over physical recovery as the club attempt to end a seven-game winless run against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The pressure on Carrick intensified after Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat at Champions League newcomers Como, a result that prompted the United manager to apologise directly to travelling supporters at full-time. Captain Bruno Fernandes added to the turbulence by appearing to question the team’s approach in Italy, further clouding the atmosphere around the club.
“It’s more mentally now,” Carrick said on Friday. “Physically, the boys are recovering from a game and there is only so much training you can do out on the grass. It’s more mental and being prepared for what’s next.”
United were without nine players in Como and face a similarly stretched squad for the Bournemouth fixture. Leny Yoro returns after serving a suspension in Italy, but Lisandro Martinez is in a race to be fit. Marcus Rashford is managing a hip complaint, while Benjamin Sesko, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu and Manuel Ugarte remain sidelined. Ayden Heaven, who had been ill, has returned to group training.
The fixture itself carries a difficult recent history for United. They have failed to beat Bournemouth in their last six meetings, with their most recent victory in this matchup coming 41 months ago under Erik ten Hag — a game in which Casemiro scored the only goal.
Carrick, making an impassioned case for collective humility on Friday, kept his message straightforward. “I think it’s pretty clear as day,” he said. “You have to earn the right to be better than your opponent. You have to do more than your opponent to win a game. That’s as simple as that. It doesn’t change. It never changes. That’s what we need to do to win more games.”
