Michael Carrick has confirmed Lisandro Martinez will be part of Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League visit to Elland Road, resolving the fallout from the Argentine’s televised criticism of director of football Jason Wilcox following the club’s Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Martinez had publicly taken aim at Wilcox in the aftermath of that loss, but Carrick indicated the matter was settled quickly after a meeting between the parties. “He made the statement and acknowledged it was a mistake on his part,” the United head coach said. “We have a really good feeling within the group, the spirit and togetherness.” When asked directly whether Martinez would be available against Leeds, Carrick confirmed: “He’s part of the squad, yeah.”

Carrick also addressed United’s intentions for the January transfer window, signalling the club plans to be active despite an already difficult season. “When the next transfer window comes, you want to plan, and you want to make the best of it,” the 45-year-old said. “Without doubt, there’s opportunity because the transfer window is open. So we’ll definitely be looking at that and trying to come out stronger in whatever way that looks like.” Carrick stopped short of confirming whether any outgoings were also being considered.

Separately, the future of teenage winger JJ Gabriel looks set to be resolved imminently, according to Spanish outlet Sport, which reports that “the moment of truth is approaching” for the youngster. Gabriel submitted a request last month to terminate his registration at United after the club rejected his demands for a seven-figure salary and guaranteed playing time. He has since been training alone in Barcelona, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich all linked.

Real Madrid are reported to be prepared to meet Gabriel’s requirements with an £8.5 million three-year deal that includes bonuses for his family and agent, putting them in a strong position to secure his signature.
