Carol Speed opens up on guilt and grief nearly 15 years after Gary Speed's death

Carol Speed, the mother of former Wales manager Gary Speed, has said she feels ‘ashamed’ that she did not recognise her son was struggling before his death in November 2011 — an admission that moved viewers of a Channel 5 News interview conducted by broadcaster Dan Walker.

The conversation formed part of the On Your Side suicide prevention toolkit, a project supported by the Prince and Princess of Wales. Nearly 15 years after Speed was found dead at his home, Carol described the lasting weight of grief and self-reproach.

“I feel quite ashamed that I should have known that he was struggling but he didn’t give us any idea,” she told Walker. “He had a big smile on his face and he seemed settled but obviously something was troubling him. It’s hard to come to terms with, even now after 15 years — I should’ve been there for him.”

She also spoke about the immediate aftermath of his death. “I was numb for a long time, when that numbness sort of cleared a bit I just wanted to go with him,” she said. “He’s always on my mind. I just miss him every day really.”

Walker, who spent the day before Speed’s death filming Football Focus with him, reflected on his own lingering questions. “I think most weeks I will think about things I should’ve seen that day or things I could have asked him,” he said. “Could I have rung him on his way home? What could I have seen?”

Carol acknowledged the way Speed’s outward circumstances masked what he was experiencing internally. “He had a lovely family, successful career, not short of money,” she said. “And yet people on the outside looking in think what’s he got to worry about, but it’s just what’s in your head isn’t it.”

Asked how she finds the strength to face each day — particularly following the death of her husband earlier this year — Carol was candid. “With great difficulty. I just go from day to day but it’s hard to get out of bed in the morning, even now, after 15 years. Gary never spoke to us about it, we didn’t have an inkling, and it was something that never crossed my mind.”

The interview drew a wide emotional response, with many viewers praising Carol’s openness in discussing a subject that remains difficult to talk about publicly.
