Cardiff sign Harlequins lock Jonny Green to fill void left by Nott's retirement
Cardiff Rugby have signed 22-year-old Harlequins second-row Jonny Green with immediate effect, one day after George Nott announced his retirement from professional rugby to pursue a career in medical sales.
Cardiff Rugby have moved swiftly to sign Harlequins lock Jonny Green with immediate effect, securing the 22-year-old just 24 hours after George Nott confirmed his retirement from professional rugby. The Welsh region announced Nott’s departure on Monday, with the 30-year-old set to leave at the end of December to take up a role in medical sales.
Green, a 124kg Wales U20 international, departs the Stoop after 30 appearances for Harlequins, having come through the club’s academy system since the age of 15 before loan spells at London Scottish and Chinnor. His arrival gives Cardiff an immediate solution to their second-row shortage and, crucially, keeps alive his ambitions of representing Wales at senior level.
Harlequins head coach Jason Gilmore paid tribute to the departing forward. “Jonny has been a valued part of our squad and product of our academy pathway,” Gilmore said. “He stepped up in tough periods for us last season too, and we wish him all the best in this next chapter of his career. Competition in our second row and wider squad is growing and we respect Jonny’s desire to take up an opportunity in Wales, who he qualifies for internationally.”
Green himself reflected warmly on his time in south-west London. “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Quins. Obviously, I’ve been at the Club since I was 15 years old — it’s been a big part of my journey and development,” he said. “I now feel as though the time is right to pursue my ambitions in Wales, with Cardiff being a massive opportunity that I am excited for.”
Cardiff head coach Corniel van Zyl had signalled the club were already active in the market for a second-row replacement following Nott’s announcement. Nott, who spent a decade in professional rugby with stints at Sale Sharks, London Irish and the Dragons, will remain available to Cardiff throughout December before officially calling time on his playing career.
