Canada Women’s Sevens have recalled three Olympians from Premiership Women’s Rugby ahead of the HSBC SVNS World Championship finale in Bordeaux, with Fancy Bermudez, Pamphinette Buisa and Chloe Daniels released by Loughborough Lightning and Bristol Bears to join the squad. Larah Wright has also been added after featuring for Canada’s ‘Next Gen’ side at the EAAST 7s last weekend.

The four arrivals replace Olivia Apps and Alysha Corrigan, who have returned to Saracens for the conclusion of the English league season, while Piper Logan is unavailable after sustaining an injury on the opening day of the Valladolid SVNS last week.

“We are excited to welcome Chloe, Fancy and Pamphinette back into the environment next week to help us continue to build on our performances,” said Canada Women’s Sevens head coach Jocelyn Barrieau. “We are happy with the performances that Olivia Apps and Alysha Corrigan put in. Their leadership and guidance are very important for our team.”

Canada currently sit fifth in the overall SVNS World Championship standings after two stops. Back-to-back fourth-place finishes in Hong Kong and Spain had kept them in contention, but the USA Women’s Eagles Sevens’ second-place finish in Valladolid has moved Emilie Bydwell’s side up to third in the 12-team competition.

Having been beaten by France and New Zealand’s Black Ferns in consecutive bronze medal matches, Canada will hope that the return of Olympic silver medallists Bermudez and Daniels provides the experience needed to compensate for the absence of Apps, Corrigan and Logan.

In Bordeaux, Canada have been drawn in Pool C alongside Spain, Great Britain and North American rivals USA.
