Caicedo handed Ecuador captaincy as Valencia steps down mid-World Cup
Moises Caicedo has been named Ecuador's new captain at the World Cup 2026, replacing Enner Valencia in an emotional handover ceremony. The Chelsea midfielder takes the armband ahead of Ecuador's round-of-32 clash with Mexico in Mexico City.
Moises Caicedo has been confirmed as Ecuador’s new captain at the 2026 World Cup, with veteran forward Enner Valencia stepping down from the role midway through the tournament. The Chelsea midfielder was handed the armband in an emotional ceremony alongside Valencia and will wear it for all of Ecuador’s remaining fixtures.
Ecuador head into the knockout rounds having scraped through Group E in third place, a position that was far from guaranteed after a difficult start to the tournament. A 1-0 defeat to the Ivory Coast and a goalless draw with Curacao left Sebastian Beccacece’s side on the brink of elimination, but a 2-1 victory over Germany in their final group game secured their passage to the round of 32.
It was during that win over Germany that Caicedo first wore the armband in the tournament, a moment that appears to have accelerated the formal transition of the captaincy. The 24-year-old had previously captained Ecuador in a friendly victory over New Zealand in November.
Valencia started all three group games but is yet to score in the tournament. Caicedo, meanwhile, has been an ever-present in the starting XI and brings growing leadership experience from club level. The midfielder has captained Chelsea on three occasions — twice in Premier League defeats to Manchester United and Manchester City in April, and once in a Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Cardiff City.
Ecuador face Mexico on Tuesday night in Mexico City in the round of 32. A victory would set up a potential last-16 meeting with either England or DR Congo.
