Cagliari forward Yael Trepy is in intensive care at the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari after nearly drowning in a swimming pool during a club-sanctioned break in Sardinia.

The 20-year-old French forward was found in the deep end of a pool at a mansion on the island, reportedly unable to swim. He was airlifted to hospital following the incident. Cagliari had given their squad two days off after Friday’s 1-0 Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo, a match in which Trepy played 53 minutes before being substituted.

The club confirmed his condition in an official statement: “Yael Trepy is currently hospitalised at the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, where he is in intensive care. The Club is in constant contact with the healthcare facility and the player’s family and is closely monitoring the progress of his condition. At this time, Cagliari Calcio’s thoughts are with Yael and his family. The Club also requests the utmost respect for their privacy and will provide any updates when available.”

Trepy grew up playing for US Creteil-Lusitanos in the suburbs of Paris before moving to Italy in 2022 and progressing through Cagliari’s youth academy. The bulk of his appearances last season came in Primavera 1, Italy’s top youth division, where he featured 24 times and scored 11 goals. He made his Serie A debut in January of last year.

Cagliari finished 14th in Serie A last season and are due to open their new campaign at Parma on Saturday. The squad are scheduled to return to training on Monday.
