Brumbies sign teenage backrower TJ Talaileva on two-year deal after Junior World Championship

The ACT Brumbies have signed 18-year-old backrower TJ Talaileva on a two-year deal, with the Australia U20 representative joining on a train-and-trial arrangement for 2027 before transitioning to a full contract in 2028.

Talaileva arrives from Shute Shield club Hunter Wildfires, where he made a dozen appearances and ranked among the competition’s elite for metres gained, defenders beaten and tries scored — despite missing a significant portion of the season on representative duty.

The loose forward made five appearances at the World Rugby Junior World Championship in Georgia, including a two-try performance in Australia’s 95-0 demolition of Spain. He was frequently used as an impact substitute but also started against Wales and Argentina. Before his rugby union career took shape, Talaileva had roots in rugby league, having played junior football for the Newcastle Knights Harold Matthews team.

“I’m really excited to be coming to Canberra and joining the Brumbies. It’s a great opportunity to test myself against some of the best backrowers in the country and around the world,” Talaileva said. “I’ve always liked the way the Brumbies play — it’s tough, physical and exciting rugby. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into that environment and seeing what I can bring to the team.”

Talaileva will train alongside a Brumbies forward group that includes Wallaby and two-time John Eales Medallist Rob Valetini, fellow Wallaby loose forward Charlie Cale, and former Australia U20 captain Toby Macpherson, who impressed across both lock and No. 8 during his rookie Super Rugby Pacific season.

Head coach Stephen Larkham was enthusiastic about the addition. “TJ is a really exciting young player. He’s got a natural feel for the game, he sees things well and he’s got a real presence on the field,” Larkham said. “He’s already shown he can play at a high level, and we’re excited to see what he can bring to the Brumbies.”
