Brian Brobbey has signed a contract extension with Sunderland, keeping the Dutch striker at the Stadium of Light until 2031 — despite Bayern Munich having monitored him earlier this year with a view to a potential summer move.

The 24-year-old joined the Black Cats from Ajax last season for a reported £21.6m and made an immediate impression, contributing seven goals and an assist in his debut Premier League campaign. That form attracted attention from some of Europe’s wealthiest clubs, but no transfer materialised and Brobbey has since pledged his future to Wearside.

“I’m really happy with the confidence the club has shown in me,” Brobbey said. “Since I arrived, I’ve felt the ambition here, and I want to keep growing and improving as a player. Representing Sunderland in the Premier League is both an honour and a privilege. I know I still can be a better version of myself, and that’s what motivates me every day.”

Brobbey also caught the eye on the international stage, scoring three goals in four appearances for the Netherlands at the World Cup before their last-32 exit to Morocco. His movement and physical presence have drawn comparisons to the most sought-after modern forwards in Europe.

This season has been more turbulent. His only league goals came in a single extraordinary outing — a hat-trick at the Etihad Stadium in Sunderland’s chaotic 5-3 defeat to Manchester City. A hamstring injury in October then sidelined him for four matches across all competitions.

The contract renewal arrives at a difficult moment for the club as a whole. Regis Le Bris’ side sit bottom of the Premier League with just five points from nine matches — a stark contrast to last season, when Sunderland secured Europa League qualification in their first campaign back in the top flight following promotion.

Brobbey’s commitment will be seen as a significant statement of intent from a club fighting to avoid an immediate return to the Championship, even if the striker’s own form and fitness have yet to consistently reflect the potential that attracted Bayern’s scouts.
