Curwin Bosch has swapped French club rugby for a fresh challenge in Pretoria, joining the Vodacom Bulls from Brive and making an immediate impression in the BKT United Rugby Championship.

The 29-year-old Springbok fly-half lines up alongside Handre Pollard at No 10 and marked his URC debut with a composed display in the Bulls’ 47-13 bonus-point win over Zebre Parma in Italy last weekend, earning praise from head coach Johan Ackermann for the control he brought to the game.

Bosch spent seven years with the Hollywoodbets Sharks before heading to France, and he is candid about why the move was necessary. “I was starting to become too comfortable at the Sharks. It was a safe space for me,” he said. “I knew everything, I knew everyone, I knew the whole of Durban. Sometimes it is hard to leave that comfort, but it was exactly what I needed, just to get out of my comfort zone and go to a country where I can’t speak the language.”

His two seasons at former European champions Brive proved to be more than a career detour. Bosch describes the spell as a mental reset that stripped away the noise surrounding his game back home. “It was a mental break, if I can put it like that. There were no side shows going on, no distractions. I could just focus on playing rugby. I just felt like I was a lot more free.”

The fly-half believes the pressures of his final seasons in South Africa had constrained his natural instincts. “The last couple of seasons I spent in South Africa, I felt I was boxed a little bit. That time in France just freed me up a little bit more. I was going back to almost how I used to play rugby at school — you see the space and you play the space. That’s when I’m at my best.”

Now settled in Pretoria, Bosch is eager to test that renewed confidence against the URC’s strongest sides. “Most of the teams we play in the BKT URC, I know. The quality of rugby is a little bit better than what I faced in France. I’m just really looking forward to testing myself once again against the best teams in the world.”

His next opportunity comes when the Bulls face Munster at Thomond Park in Limerick on Saturday.
