Bordeaux crush Saintes 4-0 in first official match of the season
Relegated to Régional 1 and still facing the threat of judicial liquidation, Bordeaux played their first official match of the season on Sunday in the Coupe de France, crushing departmental club Saintes 4-0 in the third round.
Bordeaux signed their first official victory of the season on Sunday, beating Saintes 4-0, a club competing at departmental level, in the third round of the Coupe de France. The match, played behind closed doors after being postponed a week, saw an entirely amateur FCGB field a team with an average age just over 21.
Alexandre Kalyvas opened the scoring in the 16th minute, before El Hadji M’Boup doubled the lead in the 31st. Noa Cebola extended the advantage just after the break (48th), and Hichem Abderrebi sealed the deal in the 87th minute to set the final score.
The context remains bleak for the club. Excluded from national leagues and relegated to Régional 1 — the sixth division of French football — FCGB has still not resumed its league campaign this season, suspended by the threat of judicial liquidation. The takeover of the club by American fund Park Bench nevertheless remains under discussion.
The Coupe de France therefore constitutes, for now, the only competitive window for Bordeaux. Next weekend, they will travel to Angoulême, a National 1 side (fourth division), for the fourth round of the competition.
