Bardsley warns 16-year-old Gabriel he is not yet ready for Premier League after Man Utd snub
Former Manchester United defender Phil Bardsley has cautioned teenage prospect JJ Gabriel over his readiness for Premier League football, after the club declined to meet the player's camp requests — including Champions League minutes and a guaranteed squad number.
Phil Bardsley has told Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel that he does not yet look ready for Premier League football, speaking after the 16-year-old’s representatives pushed for senior guarantees that the club ultimately refused to grant.
Gabriel, who featured for United in a pre-season friendly against Atlético Madrid, had his camp submit a series of requests to the club ahead of this season. These included a minimum of 20 minutes in the Champions League and Carabao Cup before a Premier League debut on October 25, the squad number 77, and permission to have his name displayed on his shirt as ‘Gabriel JR’. United declined all four, and also left Gabriel off their Champions League A List, ruling him out of the win over Sabah.
The player’s desire to leave Old Trafford emerged shortly before the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton — a match in which some had expected him to make his competitive debut. His future at the club now appears uncertain, with that pre-season cameo potentially his only senior appearance.
Bardsley, a former United academy graduate, drew a pointed comparison when assessing Gabriel’s situation. “I think from years gone by, you look at players who have physically developed. You have [Wayne] Rooney, for instance, who was ready to go and play at that age,” he told talkSPORT. “Look at the boy at the minute, his abilities are obviously there, he’s an outstanding talent and hopefully goes on to be a great player. But I think the timing’s a bit off, the way things are at the club and the way it came out.”
Bardsley also pointed to the influence of those around Gabriel. “I believe it’s been orchestrated by agents, parents, and pushing for these things when you’re at such a delicate age and you’re in a transition into men’s football. I think you need to be patient.”
United manager Michael Carrick has urged restraint in how the situation is handled publicly, noting that Gabriel is only a few months younger than his own son Jacey, who signed scholarship terms with the club earlier this year. “He’s a young boy, it’s important we don’t put anything out here — the exposure and scrutiny we have to be careful,” Carrick said. “We have to be sensible and think about him. The situation will work itself out.”
United currently sit with five points from their opening five Premier League matches and face Tottenham on Saturday as they look to build momentum.
