Barcelona Protected Lamine Yamal from Explosive Ceuta T-Shirt Controversy

FC Barcelona was the only La Liga club not to participate in the solidarity operation for Ceuta residents on Wednesday evening, and the reason largely stems from Lamine Yamal’s personal situation. According to Moroccan media outlet Le360, the 17-year-old winger, who holds Moroccan nationality through his father, did not wish to wear the t-shirt, and the Catalan club decided that the entire squad would abstain to avoid leaving him alone to shoulder a decision with high controversial potential.

The initiative came from the Association of Entrepreneurs of the Valencia Community (AVE), which had provided La Liga players with a solidarity t-shirt for Ceuta, a Spanish enclave whose geographical situation in Morocco is at the heart of a sensitive debate in Spain this week. Barcelona officially preferred to avoid any politically charged subject, but protecting its young international prospect appears to have weighed in the balance. “The objective was notably to not leave his young talent alone to assume a decision likely to trigger fresh controversy and, above all, to expose him to insults and racist attacks on social networks,” Le360 states.

Kylian Mbappé chose a different path. The Real Madrid striker wore the t-shirt but pulled it up to his chest alongside Ibrahima Konaté and Vinicius Jr, thus masking most of the message. Criticized for this gesture, he explained himself to newspaper AS: “I first want to express my full solidarity with Ceuta and all the victims. But I also wanted to make a gesture and show my sympathy for all migrants who have lost their lives and those still living in difficult conditions.” He was keen to clarify that he was not opposed to Ceuta residents: “I support them 100%.”n
The matter has already had repercussions in Morocco. Moroccan international Abde Ez, who had worn the t-shirt without restriction, faced strong criticism in his country before being defended by his coach Mohamed Ouahbi: “Abde, it was tactless. No one can take away his love for Morocco.”
