Baraniewski vows to return stronger after Menifield ends unbeaten UFC run

Iwo Baraniewski suffered the first loss of his professional career when Alonzo Menifield outworked him over three rounds to claim a split-decision victory at UFC 331 in Los Angeles on 19 September. Baraniewski, who entered the bout at 9-0 and was a heavy -250 favourite, was making his biggest step up in competition to date against the experienced Menifield (19-6).

Baraniewski had never been taken past the first round in any of his nine previous fights, and that inexperience showed as the contest wore on. He came out aggressively in the opening round, looking to end matters early, but Menifield absorbed the pressure and began to assert himself in the second. Fighting through an injured thumb in the third, Menifield — nicknamed “Atomic” — did enough to earn the judges’ nod and hand the 27-year-old Pole his first professional setback.

Despite the defeat, Baraniewski, known as “Rudy”, was measured in his response. “My first professional loss, but not my first in life,” he wrote on Instagram. “I’ll take a moment to rest, and I’ll come back stronger. Thank you to everyone who supports me and stands by me.”

The result is a significant setback for Baraniewski, who had been considered one of the more promising unbeaten prospects in the UFC’s light heavyweight division. However, his composed reaction suggests the defeat is unlikely to derail his development in the long term. He has indicated he will take time to recover before plotting his next move.
