Baleba, Ugarte and De Ligt among eight absentees as United travel to Everton

Manchester United head to Hill Dickinson Stadium to face Everton with a lengthy injury list, missing at least eight players across both squads as Michael Carrick’s side look to build on their 5-2 win over Ipswich Town.

The most notable absentee for United is £70m summer signing Carlos Baleba, who has been sidelined since picking up an ankle problem during pre-season. Carrick said in August: “He’s got a little ankle issue. So, maybe a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks, we’ll see. But we knew that before, so it’s no major issue. It’ll be great to have him back when we can.”

Manuel Ugarte remains a long-term casualty with a knee injury, while Matthijs de Ligt and goalkeeper Tom Heaton are also not expected to return in the near term. Winger Amad Diallo is a further doubt after picking up a muscle injury in training, with no clear timeline yet set for his comeback.

On a more positive note for United, Luke Shaw — forced off during the Ipswich victory — is expected to be fit, and Mason Mount has returned to training after recovering from a foot injury. Carrick confirmed: “Mase is back around the group, which was great. Trained this week, so that’s a big positive for us.”

For Everton, David Moyes is without summer acquisition Christian Norgaard, who has yet to feature competitively this season. Moyes offered a cautious update on the Denmark midfielder last week: “Christian is still not making great progress at the moment. It’s not something where we’re probably going to get him back quickly, so we’ll just need to see how that develops.”

Everton arrive into the fixture unbeaten, having opened their campaign with a 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace and a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth. United, meanwhile, bounced back from a chastening 2-0 defeat at Hull City with the convincing win over Ipswich, and Carrick will be eager to maintain momentum against a former United manager in Moyes.
