Auxerre escapes relegation zone with 2-1 win over Brest, drops Marseille into 16th
AJ Auxerre dominated Stade Brestois 2-1 on Sunday at Abbé-Deschamps, thanks to goals from Archer and an own goal by Le Guen. The result relegates Marseille to the drop zone before their evening clash with PSG.
AJ Auxerre beat Stade Brestois 2-1 on Sunday in Matchday 5 of Ligue 1, at Abbé-Deschamps, and escape the relegation zone at the expense of Olympique de Marseille, provisionally 16th before hosting PSG in the evening.
Brest had opened the scoring through Mboup in the 23rd minute, but the Icaunais turned the match around after the break. Archer equalized in the 47th minute, before an own goal by Le Guen (83rd) gave the home side their second consecutive league victory.
Auxerre, who had failed to pick up a single point after the first three matchdays, now total six points and climb to 9th place. Brest, beaten for the first time this season, drop to 11th place, one point behind their conquerors of the day.
The most immediate consequence of this result concerns Marseille: with this overtaking in the standings, Marseille find themselves in the relegation zone even before playing their evening match against PSG. A derby under maximum pressure for the men from the southern city, who cannot afford to slip up if they want to avoid finishing the day in the bottom three.
