Australia's yellow-card chaos denies Wallabies first top-five ranking in three years

Australia survived a stunning late collapse to beat world champions South Africa 42-38, but a record four yellow cards in the closing stages cost the Wallabies a top-five world ranking for the first time since July 2022.

Leading 42-17 with 17 minutes remaining, Australia appeared on course for a victory margin large enough to leapfrog both England and Scotland in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings. Instead, the concession of four yellow cards — the most the Wallabies have ever received in a single Test — allowed the Springboks to claw back to 42-38, leaving Australia scrambling to hold on for the win.

The result moved Australia up to sixth place in the updated rankings, their highest position in a year, with a score of 85.55 points. However, they fell agonisingly short of fifth-placed England, separated by just 0.13 points. A winning margin of more than 15 points would have lifted Australia’s score to 86.55, potentially putting them within reach of fourth-placed France.

Australia, who were once ranked as high as second in the world, had been at risk of slipping out of the top ten altogether in recent years. Sixth place, while short of what seemed possible at the 42-17 mark, still represents a significant step forward for the 2027 Rugby World Cup hosts.

For South Africa, the narrow defeat dented their historic rankings score. Having surpassed 95 points for the first time ever just weeks ago, the Springboks dropped to 93.09 — still a commanding 1.94-point lead over second-placed New Zealand.
