Arsenal's 16-year-old record-breaker Dowman compared to Yamal ahead of pre-season audition
Max Dowman, the youngest player ever to score in the Premier League, has been likened to Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal by former US prodigy Freddy Adu, with the Arsenal teenager set for extended pre-season minutes.
Max Dowman is already in the Premier League record books at 16, and now the Arsenal winger is drawing comparisons to one of the game’s brightest talents. Former United States international Freddy Adu has likened the Hale End graduate to Barcelona and Spain sensation Lamine Yamal, believing Dowman has the qualities to become England’s equivalent of the European champion.
Dowman became the youngest player ever to win the Premier League title last season and, in January, etched his name further into history with a stunning solo goal against Everton — the youngest scorer in the competition’s history. He made six appearances for Arsenal across the campaign, also contributing an assist in the 5-0 victory over Leeds United at Emirates Stadium.
Adu, who made his professional debut for D.C. United at just 14 years old more than two decades ago, sees clear parallels between the two teenagers. “I do see the similarity between Dowman and Yamal,” Adu said. “He’s good at taking people on, he comes in and he creates chances. He’s dangerous. That’s the type of player you want out there — they constantly create a threat, that puts fear in defenders.”
Adu went further, outlining what Dowman would need to fulfil his potential. “Dowman has got a way to go but, if he has the opportunity, I think he can become to England what Yamal is to Spain,” he said. “The good thing about Yamal playing in Spain and at Barcelona, they encourage it. They let him play, they don’t limit him. They just say, ‘Go out there and be you’, and that’s what takes your game to the next level.”
Dowman is now poised for a significant pre-season with Arsenal. With several first-team regulars returning late due to World Cup commitments, the teenager is expected to clock up considerable minutes before the Premier League opener against Coventry on Friday, 21 August. Arsenal are due back for pre-season training in mid-July, with a friendly against Girona scheduled for 1 August, followed by further warm-up fixtures against Real Betis, Borussia Dortmund, and Como 1907.
