Rafael Leao was shown a straight red card for violent conduct after appearing to punch Chile's Ivan Roman during Portugal's final World Cup warm-up fixture. The AC Milan winger, heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, was dismissed following VAR intervention, with Roman also sent off.
Rafael Leao was sent off for violent conduct during Portugal’s final World Cup warm-up match against Chile, deepening what has been a turbulent few months for the AC Milan winger and Arsenal transfer target.
Leao became embroiled in a brawl on the touchline, pushing a Chile opponent several times before striking him in the face. VAR reviewed the incident and the referee showed Leao a straight red card. Chile’s Ivan Roman was also dismissed for his part in the altercation.
The sending-off represents another setback for the 25-year-old, who has endured a difficult run of form and scrutiny heading into the summer. Leao is widely expected to leave AC Milan this summer, with Arsenal among the clubs linked with his signature.
The dismissal in an international warm-up will do little to ease concerns about his temperament at a critical juncture in his career, arriving just as clubs are weighing up whether to make a move for the Portuguese international.
