Arsenal loan Nwaneri to Dortmund but UEFA rules block Champions League clause

Arsenal are set to send Ethan Nwaneri to Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan, but the Gunners have been blocked by UEFA regulations from including a clause that would prevent the teenager from lining up against them in the Champions League. The two clubs meet at the Emirates Stadium in November during the league phase of the competition.

UEFA rules explicitly permit loanees to face their parent clubs in European competition — a regulation that stands in stark contrast to the Premier League’s standard practice of barring loan players from playing against their permanent employers. The precedent is well established: Philippe Coutinho famously scored against Barcelona while on loan at Bayern Munich, helping to knock his parent club out of the Champions League.

Nwaneri, 19, is making the move to the Westfalenstadion to secure the regular first-team football that Arsenal cannot currently guarantee him. Mikel Arteta acknowledged that keeping the midfielder without offering him consistent minutes would hinder his development, and the club sanctioned the temporary departure on that basis. Dortmund will cover Nwaneri’s wages in full for the duration of the loan.

The Bundesliga side accelerated their pursuit of the England youth international following an injury crisis in their attacking midfield. New signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered a torn ACL, making Nwaneri an urgent target as a replacement option.

Dortmund did request a permanent purchase option at the end of the season, but Arsenal rejected the proposal outright. The club continue to regard Nwaneri as a central part of their long-term plans and have no intention of making the arrangement anything other than temporary.

This is the second successive loan spell for the youngster. He spent the second half of last season at Marseille, though managerial upheaval at the French club limited his playing time below expectations. Arsenal will hope a full campaign in the Bundesliga provides the consistent platform his development requires, even if it comes with the unusual prospect of facing him in Europe before the year is out.
