Arsenal hand Marli Salmon first professional contract after pre-season displays impress Arteta

Arsenal have handed teenage defender Marli Salmon his first professional contract after the 17-year-old caught the eye during pre-season, including a performance in the draw with Como that earned direct praise from manager Mikel Arteta.

Salmon has been at the Emirates since joining the under-11s, initially as a forward before transitioning into defence — a switch he credits with shaping his character. Even before securing a professional deal, he had already made his senior debut, coming on for Ben White in the 83rd minute of a Champions League fixture at Club Brugge last season.

“It means a lot to me,” Salmon said after that landmark appearance. “A lot of hard work went into this, a lot of ups and downs, but I’m so proud. I think it’s a proud moment for my family as well — it’s a reward for them as much as mine.”

Reflecting on his positional switch, the teenager added: “I was an attacker in those days, so it was a bit different. It sounds kind of clichéd but it’s a lot of ups and downs, a lot of tough times. Sometimes you really go through adversity, but it’s built me to the person I am today.”

Salmon was also part of the squad environment as Arsenal claimed the Premier League title last season — their first top-flight triumph in 22 years. “Being around that was amazing,” he said. “It’s a long season, so there’s so many things that change and happen, but keeping that level over that period of time takes a lot. It’s a lot of little things that push you to be a champion.”

Breaking into the first team on a regular basis will be a significant challenge. Arsenal’s defensive unit is widely regarded as one of the strongest in Europe, with William Saliba and Gabriel considered among the world’s best centre-backs, and Jurrien Timber, Ben White, Piero Hincapie, and new signing Ezri Konsa all competing for places. Nonetheless, Salmon’s inclusion in matchday squads last season and his rapid progression suggest Arteta sees genuine long-term potential in the youngster.
